From Bride to Wife: Preparing for marriage in the midst of wedding plans

We know your wedding day is one of the most awaited days of your life, and that’s why PC9 is here to help turn your DIY dreams into reality. It’s the one day that’s all about you, your love, your family, and your friends. But one thing couples often overlook during the wedding planning process is the most important part of all this madness: your future.

Brides often spend an incredible amount time obsessing over the tiny details of their wedding (and we don’t blame them…that’s what we’re here for!), but let’s get real – the reason you’re doing all of this is ultimately to celebrate the beginning of your lifelong commitment to your beau.

In the midst of your handmade invitations, vendor interviews, and peony arrangements, try to find some time to focus on life after your Big Day.

Don’t just plan for your wedding – plan for your marriage. Here are a few tips:

1. Try pre-engagement or pre-marriage counseling. Receiving counseling doesn’t always mean you’re having problems as a couple. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about each other and to resolve any overlooked issues before they become problems. Talking to an objective third party about your future goals and expectations can help you prepare for any possible bumps in the road and sets the stage for a rock-solid marriage.

2. Be aware of the post-wedding blues. After months of planning and anticipation, a glorious day full of love and laughter, and honeymoon bliss, many brides experience a postnuptial let-down. Real life kicks in and everything suddenly isn’t all about you anymore. It’s important to recognize that these feelings are completely normal and are not an indication that you made the wrong decision! Be excited that your wedding day is the beginning of a brand new chapter of your life, and plan it with that in mind.

3. Plan fun things to do together even after the honeymoon. If you do get a case of those post-wedding blues, don’t worry. Planning fun newlywed activities will give you something new to get super excited about. Create a Bucket List as a couple and make it a goal to check off a few of those items the first months of your marriage.

4. Have a “no wedding talk” date night. Make sure you keep going on dates during your engagement. Try to set aside some time where you both agree not to bring up anything wedding related.

Remind your fiancé that you’re more excited to be married than to get married, and talk about why!

5. Recognize the wedding planning process as a chance to build marital skills. In many ways, wedding preparation presents a mini version of some of the things couples deal with together in marriage: compromise, budgeting, family drama/differences, you name it. Take this opportunity to work through issues together as a team – your marriage will be stronger because of it.

yeahweddings_t305

A Word From Tehra:

Tehra Turnbaugh Thorp was born and raised on a farm in Oklahoma.  It was her nightly duty to pick vegetables from the garden and make a salad for dinner…at age 8.  She spent a lot of time in the barns with the cows, horses, chickens, pigs, beefalo, pheasants, turkeys and geese feeding, petting, brushing and telling them stories.  Farm-life is not always easy thusly her parents thought it made sense to name the animals that would be served as dinner after cuts of meat; T-Bone and Rib-Eye were brothers for instance.  Full fat milk, hand-churned butter, and freshly ground wheat–these were the things of her childhood.  Tehra still bears a scar on her right knee due to an accident involving a tree and one stubborn mulberry on the farthest branch.

As an adult she attended Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a private chef and freelance writer for many years.  She has worked for several great chef’s including Ludovic Lefebvre but maintains that she learned the most from the cooks in those kitchens whose passions and work ethics paved the way.

Quick Tips for the Mother of the Bride (or Groom)

Image via stylemepretty.com

Image via stylemepretty.com

Happy Mothers Day to all our favorite women! If you’re currently planning a wedding, you know that a mother can be the biggest help in the world – or the biggest pain! Our big day coordinators have put together some quick tips for moms and mother-in-laws to be to make sure that the big day will be fun, not stressful.

  • Get Started on a good note. When your daughter/son announces the engagement, throw them an engagement party where you can meet the new extended family! This will make the entire wedding planning process easier since you’ve already broken the ice.
  • Choose your battles. If there are elements that are really important for you, such as a certain religious rite or tradition, choose them carefully and present them as a request; not a requirement.
  • Be realistic with your budget. Be clear with the bride and groom to be what you’re willing to pay for from the very start. It’s no longer expected that parents to pay for the wedding; 42% of couples in the northern United States pay for their own weddings. Only pay for what you’re comfortable with.
  • Make a day out of dress shopping. Be there for the choosing of the gown. You can also make sure that you and the other mother have complimentary dresses for wedding photos.
  • Ask before you invite. Don’t start calling relatives the second the engagement is announced. Wait until the bride and groom have finalized their guest count, then ask how many people you can invite.
  • Be supportive of the couples choices. Maybe you didn’t envision a rockabilly wedding for your little girl, but remember, this is her special day. Don’t force your vision on the couple,  it will just breed resentment.
  •  Try and be around to help and run errands. Most couples will be stressed and overwhelmed in the days before their wedding. It’s always greatly appreciated if you can take a few days off work to run around and help out.

Tips For Setting A Wedding Date

http://goodideasforyou.com/

Image via goodideasforyou.com

The most common question you’ll be asked after the engagement party is, “When’s the wedding?” Before you whip out your calendar, take a few minutes to think about the wedding you both want to have. Deciding some of  the details in your vision of the big day will make it a lot easier to pick the perfect date. Here are a things to keep in mind when trying to slim that 365 down a bit:

Seasons/Weather
Will you have an indoor or outdoor reception? Would you prefer a beach or a day wine country? These options might dictate what season you should have your wedding in. Consider the weather and your guests’ comfort – an outdoor reception by the beach might not be the best idea in January. Flower junkie? Cut costs by having a wedding when your favorite flowers are in season.

Bridal Party
Consider your VIP guests when deciding a date. It’s a nice gesture to ask close family and friends for their black-out dates, if any. Some common dates to avoid are: Tax day, Christmas, Super Bowl Sunday (unless you want every guy at the party to constantly be checking the score on their phones), and school graduations.

Engagement
Have a discussion with your partner about the length of your engagement. Do you want to race down the aisle or will it be a longer engagement? You’ll need to be more flexible with your date if it’s a shorter engagement, because a lot of venues require booking far in advance of the wedding day. It might also take some time to save and budget for a wedding, so a longer engagement isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Destination Wedding
If you’re having a destination wedding, it’s a good idea to plan at least one year out. Try to send out your Save The Date and travel details at least 6 months out, so guests can make travel arrangements. A passport, for instance, takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks to get.

Venue/Vendors
May through September is peak wedding season, so your favorite venue or makeup artist might not be available exactly when you need them. We suggest contacting your must-have vendors for their availability before picking a date.

Budget
Weddings aren’t cheap, so save money by having your wedding in the off-season, November through March. Vendors will be more willing to negotiate pricing with you during those months. Ceremony and reception rental fees are usually cheaper in the off-season as well.

Memories
Do you have a special date that holds sentimental value to you as a couple? Maybe it’s your first date anniversary, the day you both said “I love you,” or maybe it’s the day you knew it was meant to be. It’s super romantic to pick a sentimental date that you’ll cherish and celebrate for the rest of your life.

Whatever you both decide, it will be a fabulous wedding if you plan it with Pink Cloud 9. We guarantee it!  Congratulations and good luck!
